Postmastectomy breast reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is part of the treatment of breast cancer, not only because of the improvement that is obtained from an external aesthetic point of view, but also because of the enormous positive impact and emotional recovery after any cancer therapy.
Breast cancer is the most common malignant neoplasia in women who live in developed countries, affecting generally healthy women of childbearing age. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer over their lifetime.
Currently breast cancer is curable when detected early. Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the cornerstones in the treatment of breast cancer, while never forgetting the importance of early detection of this disease.
It is essential to reconstruct the breast that has been removed because of a tumor, just as it is essential to achieve symmetry between the healthy breast and the reconstructed breast. So only by applying techniques of cosmetic surgery in postmastectomy reconstruction can we achieve the best result. This is a topic in ongoing research by our medical team and that supports us internationally through scientific publications and papers at conferences of the specialty in which we have been pioneers in publishing reconstruction techniques that demonstrate how one can get very good results thanks to symmetry between the two breasts.
Not all reconstruction options can always be used in all patients, the technique chosen should be adapted to the special characteristics of women, determined by physical examination, history of chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy, the size and shape of the contralateral breast and the expectations and requirements of each case.
